1 · In one sentence

A yearly percentage return that takes into account WHEN money went in and came out.

2 · Think of it like thisThink of the bank interest rate that would have given you the same result as your investment, taking into account when each rupee went in and came out. IRR measures how fast money grew, so timing matters a lot.

4 · A real-world example

Investing ₹100 and getting ₹200 back in 3 years is about 26% IRR; in 6 years, about 12%.

5 · Why it matters

Timing matters: the same profit earned faster gives a higher IRR.

6 · How is it different from MOIC?

IRR (Internal Rate of Return)Speed of return (time matters)
vs
MOICSize of return (time ignored)

MOIC ignores time; IRR depends on time.

7 · Regulatory meaning

A general fund-industry term. It is not separately defined in the SEBI AIF or IFSCA Fund Management Regulations covered on this site.

8 · Explain it to someone else

Remember it this way: IRR = return per year, timing counts.

Two funds both double money. One takes 3 years, the other 8. Which has the higher IRR?

Plain-English explanations to aid understanding. Regulatory points cite their source; general finance concepts are explained as commonly used. Not legal or tax advice.
